Cairns Regional CDEP Programmes
Indigenous Job Connections (formerly trading as Cairns Regional Community Development and Employment ATSI Corporation has been delivering CDEP (Community Development Employment Program) services in the Cairns, Innisfail and Tablelands region since 2002. CDEP in these areas has now ceased but in November 2008 IJC took on the COEN CDEP contract and now IJC has won a three year Commonwealth contract from July 2009 to provide CDEP programs to the communities of Coen, Wujal Wujal, Laura, Chillagoe, Mt Garnet, and Croydon.
With substantial changes to CDEP, the demise of ATSIC, more complex Commonwealth funding models, new governing legislation and the subsequent need to change our constitution and not least the prevailing economy and unemployment rates, there is a constant need to review the way in which CRCDEP operates. We always aim to maximise the opportunities available to deliver greater benefits to indigenous people in our region and we believe we have been successful in this aim..
In the last few years CDEP has focussed heavily and successfully on transition-to-employment programs. There was then much more emphasis on the individual and much less emphasis on community development however the new CDEP program reverses that trend somewhat and has split CDEP into two streams, albeit both aimed at employment, being work readiness and community development
